An Infographic Look at Amazon.com

We know Amazon.com is enormous. But, just how big an online retailing presence is the company?
As Stephanie Mlot reports for PCmag.com: “The beauty of Amazon.com is the ability to browse hundreds of thousands of products on one Web site. But what if the online retailer were actually a brick-and-mortar store? E-commerce experts 500 Friends pondered that question in a new infographic (below), and found that Amazon has enough products to fill 1,290 Walmart Supercenters.” In 2012, Amazon was “expected to grow 23 percent, with $9,823 pouring in every five seconds, or $117,882 per minute. In total, Amazon was forecast to earn $62 billion in 2012 revenue. The numbers are even more staggering in comparison to other big-box retailers, like Target and Wal-Mart, which have 355,000 and 2.2 million total employees, respectively, but earn less than $200,000 per worker. Meanwhile, Amazon makes more than $941,000 for each of its 51,000 employees.”

The Founder of Zara: The Third-Richest Man in the World

Who is Amancio Ortega Gaona? He is one of the most reclusive billionaires in the world and the founder of the wildly popular Zara apparel chain (part of his Inditex Group). Let’s learn more about him.
As reported by Vivienne Walt for Fortune magazine: “Amancio Ortega Gaona is the third-richest man on earth. In this provincial corner of Galicia, on Spain’s windswept northwestern coastline, the 76-year-old founder of the Inditex Group has spent years secluded from public view, all while living in the middle of La Coruña, a city of 246,000 people. Among the millions of shoppers who patronize Inditex’s flagship brand, Zara, and have made Ortega unfathomably rich, few have even heard his name. Ortega has made sure of that, shunning social appearances and refusing all interview requests (including for this article). Until 1999, no photograph of Ortega had ever been published. And yet, a world away from the glitz of Paris, Milan, and New York, Ortega has built a fashion empire that reaches into more than 80 countries. Beginning 40 years ago, Ortega ripped up the business model that had been refined over decades by Europe’s fashion houses and replaced it with one of the most brutally fast turnaround schedules the industry had ever attempted. Decades later, Zara is the world’s biggest fashion retailer.”
Why is Zara so successful? “Ortega built his empire on two basic rules: Give customers what they want, and get it to them faster than anyone else. The twin organizing principles have made the company (and Ortega) into an unlikely iconoclast, more of an optimal supply chain than a traditional retailer.”
