The Customer Is King, But ….

Here is an interesting take on customer satisfaction from Harley Manning, a vice-president and research director at Forrester Research, who was recently asked this question: ‘When should we put aside the need for profits and fund customer experience projects instead?’
“His question surprised me. And I clearly surprised him when I responded, ‘Never.’  I let that hang in the air for a moment so it could sink in. Then I added, ‘You should never put aside the need for profits when you fund customer experience projects.’ I could see that people were a little confused so I went on. ‘You should only fund customer experience projects that will produce profits. That’s why you do those projects in the first place. And if you have other kinds of projects that will produce better business results, do them instead. But if you take the time to create the business models for your CX projects you’ll probably find that they’ll produce better ROI than most of the initiatives they’re competing against.'”
“To be clear, the guy who had asked the question seemed very bright, and had a lot of expertise in his area (metrics and measurement). But he had fallen into the same trap that so many customer experience advocates fall into. He wasn’t thinking of improving customer experience as a path to achieving business results. Instead he was thinking of it just as a generally good thing to do for customers (which it is, but that’s not why you should do it).”

How Can Loyalty Programs Best Satisfy Customers?

What are consumers most interested in with the loyalty programs to which they belong?
According to eMarketer: “Multichannel and Web-only retailers can earn customer loyalty by mitigating the pain points consumers encounter while shopping online. Focusing on improving shipping and delivery time, implementing a liberal return policy, and addressing trust and security concerns are some important ways retailers can win over repeat customers who believe in the brand. The effort to build and maintain a personal relationship with a customer depends heavily on technology. Big Data, social media, and mobile are at the core of the strategies that retailers said would improve the effectiveness of their loyalty programs, according to a 2012 Edgell Knowledge Network survey.

Barcodes Come to Smartphones

Until now, smartphones have not been able to accurately read product barcodes. This is about to change with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S4 in April 2013.
According to James Wester, writing for selfserviceworld.com: “As expected, the S4 will be the first Samsung device to come pre-loaded with the Visa payWave applet in the embedded secure element. (The SE is where the phone securely stores payment account information.) That means users will have mobile payment capabilities the moment they unbox their devices. They will still have to load payment credentials into the wallet, but the preloaded app eliminates the need to download a mobile wallet application. The problem with traditional barcodes is that when they are rendered on a smartphone, screen glare can prevent a scanner from reading them correctly. Mobeam technology converts the barcode to pulses of light that the scanner interprets as the barcode, thus no issue with glare. Any of the estimated 165 million laser scanners used by retailers around the world can ‘read’ barcodes presented using mobeam.”
