For Christmas 2017, John Lewis features Moz the Monster.

As reported by Alexandra Jardine for Advertising Age:

“This year’s much-anticipated John Lewis Christmas spot is the story of a huge, friendly monster who hides out under a child’s bed and becomes his best friend. The story concerns Joe, a little boy who first hears the snoring, farting monster under his bed and crossly puts up a sign on his door saying “No Monsters Allowed.” However, he comes to be friends with the seven-foot creature, playing with him every night — although when his father looks in, all he can see is Joe alone in his bed.”

“The nighttime fun takes its toll when he starts falling asleep in class and even during a soccer game. On Christmas morning, he finds a badly-wrapped gift under the tree — could it be from the monster? It’s a night light, which has the miraculous effect of making the monster disappear and letting him get some sleep — although he can still get his friend back in a second by switching the nightlight off.”

John Lewis posted a YouTube video on November 9, 2017. Within 10 days, there were well over 8.2 million views! Here’s the video.

In addition to the video, John Lewis operates a dedicated, interactive Moz the Monster Web site. Click Moz’s image to create your own monster, play with the monster, and take a selfie.

Target, American Eagle Offer Free Shopping Day

For retailers such as Amazon, free shipping is a year-round strategy. Free shipping lures millions of shoppers to pay $99 per year for Amazon Prime. They get free two-day shipping, sometimes even on Sundays.

Free Shopping Day

To compete, hundreds of other retailers offer free shipping for limited periods (some tied to minimum purchase amounts). One example of this is “Free Shipping Day.”

As Jacqueline Renfrow reports for Retail Wire:

“Target and American Eagle are just two of 225 retailers that have already signed up to be a part of Free Shipping Day on Friday, Dec. 15. Originally launched by entrepreneur Luke Knowles 10 years ago, the one-day online shopping event offers free shipping on all orders and a promise that items will be delivered by Christmas Eve.”

“Free shipping continues to be a top priority for online shoppers, according to Adobe, and among the top drivers for sales growth this holiday season — estimated to reach $107.4 billion in 2017.”

This strategy will generate shopper enthusiasm for mid-December shopping at participating retailers. BUT, free shipping is provided by many retailers for longer periods than one day. So, will “Free Shopping Day” really be impactful?

As Michael Simmons writes for CNBC: “Being among the best gets more and more demanding with each passing year. Each generation of champions develops a body of best practices. The next generation must learn them and then build upon them, leaving those who come after them with even more to learn to get up to speed. And the cycle continues.”

The first video below gives advice for great leadership: “According to former Google career coach Jenny Blake, the best bosses don’t need to be feared or loved. They just need to listen. .”

The second video relates to hiring the best talent: “Entrepreneur and host of CNBC’s “The Profit,” Marcus Lemonis shares his trick to finding new talent.”
